    Special WSB: Did you know?

Did you know Brazil is set for a significant offshore transformation?

Seventeen new Floating Production, Storage and Offloading units (FPSOs) are projected to commence operations between late 2025 and 2030.

These pivotal projects will be driven by five major oil and gas players: Petrobras, Equinor, BW Energy, Shell and Brava Energy, signaling a period of intense growth and strategic investment.

Currently, Brazil has 73 production units in operation, including recent additions like the FPSO Maria Quitéria (Yinson), Alexandre de Gusmão (SBM) and Almirante Tamandaré (SBM), which began work this year.

With the imminent exploration of the Equatorial Margin and a growing market demand for more sustainable solutions, this number is naturally expected to increase.

Moreover, approximately 50% of the national FPSO and semi-submersible fleet is already considered obsolete, signaling a heated market for these critical assets in Brazilian waters and highlighting the urgent need for infrastructure modernization. These insights reveal a sector in constant evolution, demanding strategic attention to navigate its complex dynamics.

    Insights on Brazil’s drilling scenario!

    By Alexandre Vilela

The state-of-the-art drillship Atlantic Zonda has departed Singapore en route to Brazil. This 7th-generation, dual-drilling rig, built on Samsung 96K design, is capable of drilling in water depths of up to 12,000 feet.

Once in Brazilian waters, Petrobras will engage the Zonda for a 36-month contract, marking a key step in its $102 billion exploration strategy for 2024-2028, which includes drilling 50 new wells and deploying additional FPSOs.

Local operations will be managed by Ventura Offshore, a Brazilian deepwater drilling leader with over 25 years of experience. Ventura recently celebrated a significant milestone by becoming a publicly traded company on the Euronext Growth stock exchange. With a proven track record of managing high-performance rigs like the Zonda and their own drillships like DS Carolina, Ventura is reinforcing its position as a key player in Brazil’s offshore development.

    WSB: Oil & Gas Expanding

Brazil’s oil and gas sector is, according to EPE, expected to attract $182 billion in investments by 2030, with production reaching 5.4 million barrels per day, positioning the country as the 5th largest producer globally. As stated by FIRJAN, the Federation of Industries of Rio de Janeiro, this increase will prompt 115,000 jobs in Rio de Janeiro alone, driven by the rising demand and 13 new FPSOs by 2028.

At our recent WSB Seminar, FIRJAN’s Thiago Valejo emphasized the critical role of human capital in supporting this expansion. He also highlighted FIRJAN’s collaboration with Senai and others to expand training programs, ensuring the industry has the skilled workforce needed for the future. At WSB, we strongly advocate for transforming how the industry approaches talent and fully support FIRJAN’s initiatives.
