    Transpetro – Decarbonization plans

Decarbonization in shipping is becoming less about breakthrough technologies and more about combining practical solutions that can be deployed today.

Transpetro’s latest initiative reflects this approach in practice.

On July 2, the Petrobras subsidiary completed its first bunkering operation using B30, a marine fuel containing 30% renewable content. The operation took place at the Port of Rotterdam, where the tanker Olavo Bilac received approximately 400 tonnes of fuel.

The initiative builds on a program launched in 2025. During its first phase, six vessels operated on B24 fuel, consuming around 4,000 tonnes and avoiding approximately 1,600 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.

The use of renewable-content marine fuels is only one component of the company’s broader decarbonization strategy.

Transpetro is also investing in hydrodynamic appendages, engine combustion optimization, software-based speed monitoring, regular hull cleaning and specialized low-friction coatings. Together, these initiatives improve vessel efficiency, reduce fuel consumption and contribute to lower greenhouse gas emissions.

For shipowners and operators, the direction is becoming increasingly clear. Progress toward lower emissions is likely to come from combining alternative fuels with proven efficiency technologies, allowing measurable reductions while leveraging existing fleet infrastructure.

The initiative is aligned with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) ambition of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping by or around 2050.

Transpetro signs contract for four new MR1 tankers

Transpetro has signed a US$427 million contract with Ecovix’s Rio Grande shipyard for the construction of four MR1-class tankers, each with a deadweight capacity of approximately 40,000 tons. The vessels will transport crude oil and petroleum products along the Brazilian coast as part of the company’s fleet renewal and expansion strategy.

The contract stems from the tender concluded in 2024 and forms part of the Mar Aberto Program, Transpetro’s long-term initiative to renew and expand the Petrobras System fleet. Delivery of the first vessel is expected within 33 months.

The broader program includes plans for the construction of 16 coastal shipping vessels, as well as 18 barges and 18 tugboats, reinforcing Transpetro’s long-term investment in Brazil’s maritime logistics infrastructure.

According to Transpetro President Sérgio Bacci, the four MR1 tankers will strengthen the company’s logistics capacity to support Petrobras’ growing production and refining activities. He also stated that, with the vessels contracted under the current fleet renewal program, Transpetro expects to expand its fleet from 26 to 42 vessels by 2030, while supporting the revitalization of Brazil’s domestic shipbuilding industry.

Transpetro MR1 vessels: Ecovix leads the bid

    Victory!
    ECOVIX strikes again.

With the best equalized rate per vessel, ECOVIX leads the opening round in the dispute for the Transpetro MR1 tanker package, outbidding India’s SDHI and China’s DSOC (Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore).

Once again, the Brazilian industry demonstrates that, under clear and transparent equalization criteria, local shipbuilding can compete head-to-head with major international yards.

This marks the first stage of the tender process, where commercial proposals are opened and equalized. The qualification phase now follows.

Scale matters. With nine large vessels already underway for Transpetro, ECOVIX continues to build momentum and reinforce Brazil’s shipbuilding capability — with solid market alignment behind the project.

An encouraging signal for the Brazilian shipbuilding industry.

    More to be disclosed soon.

  • MR1 bid postponed

    MR1 bid postponed

At the request of shipyards, Transpetro has postponed the deadline for submitting bids for the tender to acquire four MR1 tanker vessels. The new deadline has been set for March 9, exactly one month after the original closing date. The bidding process has been open since November and initially granted 90 days for bidders to submit their proposals.

The tender covers the construction of four MR1 tankers, each with a 40,000 DWT capacity, intended for the transportation clean petroleum products along the Brazilian coast. Shipyards will be required to deliver the vessels within 33 months after contract signing. According to Transpetro, the ships will incorporate advanced technologies aimed at improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Contract signing is expected to take place in the third quarter of this year (July–September).

This bidding round follows previous tenders for 18 barges and 18 pushers, as well as four LR1 tankers, reinforcing Petrobras’ long-term logistics strategy and the ongoing revival of Brazil’s shipbuilding industry. Recently, Transpetro held an exclusive supplier event in Rio de Janeiro, where technical guidelines for the project were presented.

  • Mar Aberto Program

    Mar Aberto Program

As reported by WSB Advisors, Petrobras and Transpetro – Petrobras Transporte S. A. held a contract-signing ceremony in Rio Grande (RS) on 20 January for the construction of 41 vessels under the “Mar Aberto” (Open Sea) program, totaling investments of approximately R$ 2.8 billion. The event was attended by Petrobras CEO Magda Chambriard, Transpetro CEO Sérgio Bacci, federal authorities and political representatives, becoming one of the main highlights of Brazil’s oil and gas market this week.

The package includes five gas carriers, 18 pushboats and 18 barges, all to be operated by Transpetro. The vessels will be built across three Brazilian states, reinforcing domestic shipbuilding capacity. In Rio Grande do Sul, Estaleiro Rio Grande S.A. will construct the five LPG carriers, which represent the largest share of the investment. In Amazonas, Bertolini Construção Naval. da Amazônia will build the 18 barges, while in Santa Catarina, INC – Indústria Naval Catarinense will be responsible for the 18 pushboats.

The new contracts mark the start of a new investment cycle in fleet renewal and shipbuilding, strengthening local content policies and supporting the recovery of Brazil’s naval production chain. With the inclusion of barges and pushboats, Transpetro will also enter inland fuel transportation with its own fleet, verticalizing bunkering operations and expanding logistical flexibility.

The contracts rank among the most significant shipbuilding investments in Brazil in recent years, with direct impacts on shipyard reactivation, job creation and the domestic supply chain for goods and services. Despite adjustments in Petrobras’ medium-term investment outlook, the signing confirms continuity of industrial orders aligned with logistics, energy security and fleet modernization objectives.

  • Transpetro expands its logistics role with the integration of PB-LOG

Transpetro expands its logistics role with the integration of PB-LOG

Transpetro completed a new step in its strategy to expand operations in oil and refined-product logistics by integrating Petrobras Logística de Exploração & Produção S.A. (PB-LOG) into its structure. With the change, Transpetro now takes on offshore support activities and emergency-response management in areas operated by Petrobras-led consortia.

PB-LOG, previously a wholly owned subsidiary of Petrobras, now becomes part of Transpetro’s management structure. The integration was approved across all governance levels and involves a capital increase within Transpetro, without new share issuance.

According to Transpetro’s president, Sérgio Bacci, the move aligns with the company’s central objective of broadening its logistical footprint and strengthening its position as a profitable state-owned operator with integrated multimodal capabilities. PB-LOG’s incorporation complements ongoing investments in pipelines, terminals, fleet expansion and inland navigation, reinforcing a strategy focused on capturing new clients and opening new market segments.

With this integration, Transpetro expands its presence in E&P logistics, leveraging synergies with PB-LOG to deliver more comprehensive and integrated services. The current growth cycle is supported by new investments in terminal capacity, pipeline modernization, fleet renewal and entry into new transport modes.

Since last year, Transpetro has launched tenders for 16 vessels — four handy tankers, eight gas carriers and four MR1 tankers — aimed at increasing coastal transport capacity. The company also advanced with procurement for 18 barges and 18 pushers to expand inland navigation, and confirmed the contracting of nine DP shuttle tankers to enhance offloading capacity for Petrobras-operated platforms.

PB-LOG, created in 2012, provides emergency-response services for offshore operations and integrated logistics solutions across land, maritime and air transport. Its operations are concentrated in Southeast Brazil, supporting 21 consortia involving 12 companies. In 2024, the company reported net income of R$533 million.
