    WSB: Oil & Gas Expanding

Brazil’s oil and gas sector is, according to EPE, expected to attract $182 billion in investments by 2030, with production reaching 5.4 million barrels per day, positioning the country as the 5th largest producer globally. As stated by FIRJAN, the Federation of Industries of Rio de Janeiro, this increase will prompt 115,000 jobs in Rio de Janeiro alone, driven by the rising demand and 13 new FPSOs by 2028.

At our recent WSB Seminar, FIRJAN’s Thiago Valejo emphasized the critical role of human capital in supporting this expansion. He also highlighted FIRJAN’s collaboration with Senai and others to expand training programs, ensuring the industry has the skilled workforce needed for the future. At WSB, we strongly advocate for transforming how the industry approaches talent and fully support FIRJAN’s initiatives.

Count on WSB Advisors to guide your business through this exciting new phase!

  • Marine Fuels Market on the Rise in Brazil

Marine Fuels Market on the Rise in Brazil

    By Alexandre Vilela

The Brazilian marine fuels market is booming! Over the past few years, Bunker One has grown, with new operations and equipment. Meanwhile, Monjasa and local heavyweights Ipiranga, Raízen with a recently deployed new dedicated barge and Vibra (formerly BR Distribuidora) have jumped into the action, showing just how critical this market has become.

With Efen (formerly NFX) leading the way as the first company to deploy dedicated PSVs for Marine Gasoil (MGO) clients directly offshore; and with the growing demand for VLSFO (Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil) and MGO, all major players are expanding their operations and seeking additional tonnage.

    Production news: an update

The ANP (National Agency of Petroleum) has released the Monthly Report on Oil and Natural Gas Production for August 2024. During this period, the total production (oil + natural gas) reached 4.345 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (boed).

Of this total,  3,340 million boed were extracted, reflecting a 3.4% increase compared to the previous month and a 3.5% rise compared to the same month in 2023.

Natural gas production in August was 159,7 million cubic meters per day (m³/d). This figure indicates a 2.7% increase from July, but a decline and 8% compared to August 2023.

Petrobras PSV New Building Bid Results are Out!

As antecipated, Bram Offshore (Edison Chouest Offshore) and Starnav Serviços Marítimos have delivered the most competitive offers. Notably, Posidonia Shipping was about 10% higher than Bram, but worth highlighting that Posidonia’s bid was the lowest among those not utilizing their own shipyard—well done!

The table below orders the bids from lowest to highest, but remember, Petrobras evaluates based on the total disbursement across all lots for the desired number of vessels.

While negotiations are still pending, the logic suggests we may see 6 vessels from Bram and another 6 from Starnav.

The tender is divided into two lots, covering both Brazilian-flagged and foreign-flagged vessels. There are two different start periods: Group A includes vessels expected to begin operations in December 2025 or within 180 days after the contract is signed, whichever is later. • Brazil’s Energy Future: Battery Auction?

    Brazil’s Energy Future: Battery Auction?

The Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy has launched a public consultation for a potential battery auction. This would be an important step forward in advancing storage systems in the country’s energy grid.

The government intends for this auction to begin in June 2025, structured as a capacity reserve auction. Contributions are open until October 28 of this year, with the implementation of the systems planned for 2029.

The expectation is that this auction will attract foreign investors to Brazil, particularly from China, including companies like Huawei. The newspaper O Globo reported that the auction will enhance the integration of intermittent energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower.

According to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, “the main innovation of this auction is the procurement of battery storage systems, which have gained prominence in discussions about the Brazilian energy matrix. These systems provide instant response and operational flexibility, aligning with the country’s energy transition goals while ensuring the competitiveness of the electric system. The declining costs of batteries facilitate their global adoption for various applications, including system stability. Climate change is making the operation of the electric system more challenging, underscoring the importance of energy storage. This contributes to the security of the national electricity supply.”

According to “Poder 360,” Brazil does not anticipate a large-scale battery auction at this initial stage, and the real objective of the auction is to facilitate the entry of new technologies into the country.
