  • FPSO in Brazilian waters: boosting Mero field

FPSO in Brazilian waters: boosting Mero field

The FPSO Alexandre de Gusmão has arrived in Brazilian waters. Built by SBM and chartered by Petrobras, the vessel left China in December last year and is expected to begin production in mid-2025.

With a production capacity of 180,000 barrels of oil per day and the ability to compress 12 million cubic meters of gas daily, the FPSO will increase production at the Mero field (Santos Basin) by approximately 35%. Last Friday (28), Mero set a new production record, reaching 500,000 boe/d.

“Mero is Brazil’s third-largest field in terms of oil in place and production, behind only Tupi and Búzios. Production will continue to grow with the ramp-up of the FPSO Marechal Duque de Caxias and the start-up of the Alexandre de Gusmão. We’ve heavily invested in technological development, which allows us to increase productivity while minimizing greenhouse gas emissions, all with safety and integrity,” says Sylvia Anjos, Petrobras’ Director of Exploration and Production.

    Karoon acquires FPSO

Karoon Energy has acquired 100% of the FPSO Cidade de Itajaí from Altera Infrastructure & Ocyan for $115 million. The deal also includes approximately $8 million in transaction costs, with the bureaucratic procedures expected to be completed by April.

The vessel has been operating in the Baúna Field, Santos Basin, since 2013 and has a production capacity of up to 80,000 barrels of oil per day (boed) and gas compression capacity of 2 million cubic meters per day.

Karoon has owned the Baúna Field since 2020. Now, as both the field and FPSO owner, the Australian company will seek a new operator for the unit. Until then, Altera & Ocyan will continue managing operations.

    Petrobras: plans, updates and challenges

    By Rafael Bortoloti

Petrobras held a press conference last Thursday (27), initially focused on its financial results, but executives also shared updates on key projects, which we highlight below:

    * New tenders for the FPSO Barracuda/Caratinga, now under a BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) model.
    * FPSO Alexandre de Gusmão is expected to arrive in Brazil in early March.
    * A strong 2025 ahead, with new platforms entering operation and others ramping up.
    * Strategic focus on two key exploration areas: new reserves (Equatorial Margin + Pelotas Basin) and mature fields.
    * Attention to exploration opportunities abroad while also maintaining and optimizing existing assets.
    * The revised SEAP bidding rules now allow the winner of the first platform to supply the second, potentially helping recover delays.
    * Búzios Field nearing 1 million boe/d production. This week, it hit a new record of 800,000 boe/d, boosted by FPSO Almirante Tamandaré’s startup.

  • Merger: Saipem and Subsea7

    Merger: Saipem and Subsea7

    By Rafael Bortoloti

Saipem and Subsea7 have announced a preliminary agreement for a potential merger, signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU). If finalized, the deal will create a global energy services giant, possibly named Saipem7.

The new company will have a combined backlog of €43 billion, revenue of approximately €20 billion, and an EBITDA of over €2 billion. Subsea7 shareholders will receive 6.688 Saipem shares for each share they hold, and both companies will split the capital of the merged entity equally.

The announcement took the offshore market by surprise, as there had been no rumors of the transaction. However, mergers and acquisitions have become increasingly common since 2024, with moves like the formation of Brava, Wilson Sons’ sale to MSC, Boskalis acquiring ALP, and DOF acquiring Maersk.

Is industry consolidation here to stay?
